The gibbons at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium were busy swinging around and playing the other day. The blonde one, Mai, lost her arm more than decade ago, but still gets around as good as she ever did. The dark one is Picard, her male companion.

Though I visit the zoo several times a month and have become familiar with and, I think, familiar to its animals, I’ m still not positive that I would be scientific in saying that I see the equivalent of human emotions in animal behavior. However, very often, I see these two gibbons preening each other or sitting motionless and content in each other’ s embrace for many moments. Offhand, I would say they love each other.
Should we expect to see them at your Valentine’s Day dinner?
Hi Francis,
If there is love in the animal world, these two definitely qualify.
They won’t be at the Valentine’s Day event. The dinner and presentation are at night in the Water’s Edge complex.
My daughter wants to know how Mai lost her arm.
